Born in 1772 in Pennsylvania, Joseph Schneider moved in 1806 with his family to the Waterloo Region. He owned a sawmill and was an active member of the Mennonite Settlers. He is regarded as one of the original founders of Kitchener. He built his house around 1816 on land originally called Sand Hills, then Ebytown, Berlin and now Kitchener. He died in 1843.

Suite #311: Breithaupt Model

William Henry Breithaupt was born in 1857 in Buffalo, N. Y. In the year 1900, he immigrated to Berlin, Ontario. A very accomplished civil engineer, he built railway bridges in various locations on the continent. He built the Berlin gasworks, the Berlin and Waterloo railway and extended a line to Bridgeport. He was the first chairman of the City Planning Commission of Berlin, Ontario.

Suite #404: Bricker Model

Samuel Bricker was a prominent landowner and early Waterloo County settler. He purchased farmland near Blair, Ontario, in 1802. By the same year, Bricker and other investors formed the German Company, bringing dozens of pioneering families from Pennsylvania, whose influence helped shape the region’s future.

Suite #407: Eby Model

Benjamin Eby was a pioneer bishop of the Mennonite Church serving in Ontario, he was born in Pennsylvania on May 2, 1785. He and his wife, Mary, immigrated to Waterloo County, Ontario, in 1807. He was ordained as minister in 1809 and as bishop in 1812. In 1813, he built a log meeting house, the first building erected solely for religious worship in Waterloo County. The congregation had at least 150 members. At the same time, he carried on his farming, his farm comprising a large part of the East Ward of the modern city of Kitchener.

Suite #409: Huber Model

James Thornton Huber was born in Waterloo region on August 19, 1853. At age 18, his occupation is listed as Clerk in North Dumfries Township. At age 25, he opened J. T. Huber Groceries and Crockery in Berlin (Kitchener). At age 33 he is listed as working for Atlantic Glue Works and at age 38 he opened J. T. Huber & Co., manufacturers of Patent and Compressed Insoles while continuing to operate the Groceries and Crockery business where he carried both staple and fancy groceries and a large stock of crockery and glassware.

Named for Benjamin Eby, a pioneer bishop of the Mennonite Church in Ontario, who immigrated to Waterloo County in 1807. Eby built the region’s first meeting house for worship, was a leader in community farming and spiritual life, and his legacy is reflected in much of East Kitchener today.
